Hanbury Ballroom Funk Night

Funk Night at the Hanbury Ballroom, Kemp Town, Brighton on Sunday, 8th June 2003
Around 125 people attended the “funk” night at the Hanbury Ballroom in Kemp Town, Brighton, on Sunday which proved to be a superb evening for all concerned.
The event started off with the soulful and beautiful voice of Eva, a singer-song writer with enormous talent and, no doubt, a great future ahead of her. DJ Frank “Blunted Soul” then took up the decks with a mixture of sixties and seventies funk tracks which went down extremely well. The final act of the evening was from the band Boxer who gave energetic performances of their own material, being a fusion of funky dance breaks and uplifting house with soulful vocals which made everyone take to the dance floor within seconds.
We would like to say a “big thank you” to Eva, Boxer and DJ Frank (and DJ Olly also of “Blunted Soul” who relieved Frank when he had to double up as a member of Boxer) for the great music and entertainment that they provided. Thanks Guys!
We would also like to say a big thank you to James and Shariffe who provided contacts with Kylie Minogue and Karen Pearson (Gilles Peterson’s producer at BBC Radio 1) respectively. Kylie Minogue donated 4 signed CD’s and Ms Pearson donated a substantial amount of goodies, including CDs (including 1 limited edition CD signed by Gilles Peterson), books and videos.
Thanks to Claire’s natural talent as an auctioneer, we were able to raise £440 in the auction of two of Kylie Minogue’s signed CDs (bought by Kitty and Tatum) and a signed CD from Gilles Peterson, bought by Angela. Thanks Kitty, Tatum and Angela for getting into the spirit of the auction and your generous contribution to the night!
A further £235 or so was raised by the raffle, with over 20 prizes being won by guests.
Finally, we would like to thank Elwyn for organising free promotional Sailor Jerrys drinks to all the guests which, needless to say, went down very well.
All in all, the event was a great success and a good time was had by all. A total of £1, 285.23 was raised by the event, which will be used to help ENCOMPASS achieve its aims and initiatives over the course of this year and into 2004.
Well done everyone!
